The basics |
B |
Even before you pick up a golf club you need to know some basic information about safety, codes of conduct, who’s-who, etiquette, discipline and the junior section of the golf club. This tutorial should take no more than 45 minutes. Class size 16 max. |
|
C2 |
Kit inspection |
B |
Not all juniors will be custom fitted for clubs so it is probable that the professional can give a word or two of advice about the clubs and other equipment that you own. The inspection will cover suitability of clubs, size, grips, repair, maintenance, as well as advice on other equipment such as weather gear, shoes, gloves and accessories. This tutorial should take no longer than 30 minutes. Class size 6 max. |
|
C3 |
Exercises |
B, I, M, A |
Golf uses lots of muscle sets and it is important to keep these supple. Also important is the warm up before you go out to play or practice. Most sports injuries occur as a result of muscle strains due to poor warm-up programmes. This tutorial should take no longer than 20 minutes. Class size 30 max. |
|
C4 |
G.A.S.P. |
B, I, M |
The fundamentals of the golf technique: Grip, Alignment, Stance and Posture. The professional will have seen them all as a coach, and knows which ones work and which ones do not. Be aware that there is no perfect model; we are all different and so are our golf swings. This tutorial should take no longer than 45 minutes. Class size 6 max. |
|
C5 |
Putting |
B, I, M, A |
A very personal technique, but there are some basics that need to be understood, not least of which is the club itself. The adage ‘drive for show putt for dough’ says it all. A good putter can very often rescue a round of golf, so plenty of time practicing your technique and learning how to read the line, and especially the length, is important. This tutorial should take no longer than 45 minutes. Class size 10. |
|
C6 |
Short Irons |
B, I, M, A |
75% of shots are played within 100 yards of the flag, so it makes sense to start your practice here. As lofted irons are easier to hit than long irons, it also helps to build confidence on the range. The closer you get to the green the more varied the shot options, and course management skills begin to feature. Short irons are also the clubs most frequently used when playing from hazards and difficult lies, so mastering these clubs (8 iron to SW) really can help your scores. This tutorial should take no longer than 45 minutes. Class size 10 max. |
|
C7 |
Medium Irons |
B, I, M, A |
For most high to medium handicap golfers a medium iron will be used at almost every hole. Consistent striking is the key to success and that depends upon consistency in the GASP routine. The more advanced golfers will learn about shot shaping to master obstacles and the wind. This tutorial should take no longer than 45 minutes. Class size 10 max. |
|
C8 |
Long Irons |
A |
High and middle handicap players often leave the long irons out of the bag in favour of the rescue and fairway woods, but mastery of the long iron can bring dividends, especially when accuracy is important. This tutorial should take no longer than 45 minutes. Class size 10 max. |
|
C9 |
Woods |
I, M, A |
Incorporating both fairway woods and rescue clubs many golfers prefer to use these instead of long irons. Often the selection of the club is with distance in mind. For those who have problems hitting a driver off the Tee then often a fairway wood is used. The sweep technique is slightly different from the long iron shot and with longer shafts on the fairway woods, a different skill is required. This tutorial should take no longer than 45 minutes. Class size 10 max. |
|
C10 |
Off the Tee |
B, I, M, A |
The driver is not the only solution, although for macho golfers it’s a must. A good drive provides a confident foundation for the rest of the hole, but distance and accuracy do not always go hand-in-hand, especially when there is a gale blowing. A long drive into the rough or a hazard often results in no better than a bogey; a straight drive significantly increases the chance of a par. On a par 72 course, an 18 handicap player will play on average 20% of all his shots off the Tee, but more than 30% on the green. This fact should influence the balance of your practice. This tutorial should take no longer than 45 minutes. Class size 10 max. |
|
C11 |
Bunker play |
B, I, M, A |
We all get into them, but we don’t all get out of them first time, but when you ask a pro they often prefer to be in them than in the rough. This tutorial will teach you not to be intimidated by bunker shots. This tutorial should take no longer than 45 minutes. Class size 6 max. |
|
C12 |
Chipping/pitching |
B, I, M, A |
Distance control and accuracy generate results on both these shots. A chip is designed to roll after landing using the contours of the surface, whereas a pitch is a higher flight shot intended to stop quickly. Both shots may be used in the same circumstance, so confidence, touch and feel are all important. Not all chippers are good pitchers and vice versa, but the course conditions often dictate shot selection. This tutorial should take no longer than 45 minutes. Class size 6 max. |
|
C13 |
Course management |
B, I, M, A |
This is not about irrigation and green-keeping as its name might suggest, but is about how to plot and plan your way through your round of golf taking into account the format of the game, the layout of the course, the weather conditions, the conditions of the course, the hazards that you are presented with, and the lies that you find. To think your way around the course you need also be aware of your own limitations. This is about being sensible with your shot selection, and playing ‘the percentage game’. This tutorial should take no longer than 45 minutes. Class size 10 max. |
